Among his most intimate paintings, Picnic, Shaker Lake, Alfred Maine is a close up view of life in the 1920s for Gaylor and his artistic circle. Transported from New York City’s summer heat and frenzy to the respite of Ogunquit, Maine and its environs, Gaylor depicts his friends completely at ease – lolling on a warm day, admiring the view, and sketching in a tranquil atmosphere. The locomotive, the fishing line and the cattails contribute to the painting’s charm.
