The Wedding, ca. 1930

Earl Horter

The Wedding is from Horter’s mature – abstract cubist – style. The interlocking, layered forms — some jagged and architectural, others soft and draped —evoke the merging of two distinct entities into one. The contrast between the warm, deep reds and oranges on the right and the cooler greens and blues on the left might suggest the coming together of two different presences or energies. The white, veil-like ribbons of paint weaving through the center are particularly evocative — almost literally suggesting flowing fabric or ceremonial dress.
